I had a courtside ticket to our fall from 17th to 50th in national education rankings."</h3><h4>MEET CARROLL ASSEO:</h4>Carroll Asseo is a native Oklahoman who has lived in Moore for 40 years. She is a graduate of Lawton High School and Cameron University, where she earned a B.S. in 1975. She has spent her career as a public educator, from teacher to principal to superintendent, prior to her retirement in 2018. During her tenure, she has called Oklahoma City, Moore, Schwartz, and Mid-Del Public Schools home. She and her husband, Roger, taught together for many years, and both come from military families. They are both gun owners who believe in safety and responsible ownership. Carroll’s favorite activities include spending time with her grandson and volunteering in the community.

The cost of goods and services continues to go up every year, but Oklahoma’s minimum wage hasn’t increased since 2009. I support State Question 832, which would gradually raise our minimum wage to $15.00 per hour by 2029. Regardless of the vote on SQ 832, I believe the legislature should address employee wages without a citizen initiative petition.We need to diversify the types of jobs available in Oklahoma. Recent headlines show companies relocating to other states due to the lack of investment we’ve made, both in our public infrastructure and in our people. Once elected, I will work to ensure that we become an attractive state to anyone looking to do business.Oklahoma’s middle class is strongest when employees collectively bargain for their wages and terms of employment. I support the right of all workers to form or join a labor union, and I oppose any efforts to weaken union protections in state law.&nbsp;

Carroll believes businesses should be partners in building strong communities—not contributors to inequality. She will support policies that hold corporations accountable while encouraging responsible job creation. Her focus is simple: ensure that hardworking Oklahomans can earn a living wage, access healthcare, and build a stable future for their families.

Our hospitals across the state are at risk of closing due to a lack of funding. This directly impacts people’s lives and leads to a higher death rate. As your representative, I will fight to ensure our local hospitals receive the dollars they need to stay open.&nbsp;Our nutrition and health assistance programs, such as SNAP, are being stretched thin. Oklahoma’s largest employers are paying substandard wages and classifying workers as part-time to avoid providing health insurance. This pushes employees onto SoonerCare and public assistance despite their willingness to work. These corporations need to start doing their part so Oklahomans can thrive - hopefully voluntarily, but by legislation if necessary.Oklahoma already has a state-level health insurance marketplace through the Affordable Care Act. Instead of putting more money into SoonerCare, let’s switch our funding to that marketplace and use our federal partnership. This will make overall plans cheaper and give people more control over their health insurance.

Oklahoma families are feeling the squeeze as everyday costs, from groceries to housing to childcare, continue to rise while wages lag behind. Carroll supports raising the minimum wage to $15/hour, but she knows that’s only one part of the solution. She believes the legislature must take a more active role in lowering the cost of living and creating real pathways to financial stability for working families.Carroll will fight to lower everyday expenses by supporting targeted tax relief for middle- and working-class families, while opposing tax giveaways that primarily benefit large corporations. She will advocate for policies that reduce housing costs by encouraging smart development and investing in infrastructure to support growing communities. Carroll also supports expanding access to affordable childcare, recognizing that high childcare costs are among the biggest barriers to parents fully participating in the workforce.To help Oklahomans earn more, Carroll will work to attract and grow industries that offer good-paying, stable jobs, especially in sectors such as energy innovation, education, healthcare, and the skilled trades. She believes in investing in workforce development programs and career training so Oklahomans can fill those jobs and build long-term careers. Carroll will also support small businesses, the backbone of local economies, by cutting unnecessary red tape and ensuring they have access to the resources they need to grow and hire locally.Finally, Carroll is a strong supporter of workers’ rights. She believes that when workers have a voice, through unions or collective bargaining, they earn better wages, have safer workplaces, and build stronger communities. Her approach is simple: raise wages, lower costs, and make sure Oklahoma’s economy works for everyone, not just those at the top.

Lower Costs & Higher Wages

Oklahoma’s public education system has been underfunded for decades, leading to overcrowded classrooms, teacher shortages, and declining outcomes. Carroll has seen this decline firsthand and knows that our current system is failing both students and educators. She will fight to invest Rainy Day Fund dollars into education, reduce class sizes, and implement forward-looking reforms. Carroll will also introduce legislation to reimburse tuition for Oklahoma-trained teachers who stay and teach in-state, helping stop the brain drain and rebuild our education workforce. The Education Reform Act of 1990 (HB 1017) provided significant changes to teacher pay, school grading, and state funding. But now, two generations later, its remedies are no longer in use. It’s time for a new plan that addresses both the lack of funds and the increased class sizes that teachers are facing. We have sufficient money in the state’s Rainy Day Fund to give public education a big boost - so let’s do it!We have one of the strongest teacher education and training systems in the country. However, we are currently experiencing a “brain drain” as newly graduated educators leave for greener pastures and greener wallets. I will introduce legislation to reimburse tuition costs for Oklahoma education graduates who teach in Oklahoma public schools. This bill will also incentivize teachers from other states with bonuses for committing to teach in Oklahoma.Carroll is committed to fighting our ranking as 50th in the Nation in education.
